Making Insects - 14th October 2015

Sculpture: Making Insects

Health & Safety:
  1. Use tools carefully
  2. Be careful of sharp wire.
  3. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

Materials needed:

  • Pliers,
  • Masking tape,
  • Mod rock,
  • Bowl of water,
  • Scissors,
  • Hands,
  • Pen,
  • Paper,
  • Hot glue gun,

To begin, draw out the pieces you think you will need to make your ant. This is so that you have a rough guide of what you will need.

Next, cut out the wire sizes previously drawn, using your pliers. After this, you want to assemble your ant, fastening it together, with masking tape.

Another image, showing the materials being used.

After this, take a pair of scissors and cut out some small strips of mod rock. We don't want to use too much at once, otherwise it will look too bulky.
What you want to do, is dip each piece into water and layer it onto your ant, building up over the frame of it, leaving the inside hollow and building up a 'cage'.

Keep building, until you are happy with your final result!

Because the theme of this project was 'Cabinets of Curiosity', I made a box out of plastic and stuck it together using a hot glue gun.

I made a further two insects (a spider and a moth) and attached glasses lenses to the box with wire to magnify my insects and emphasise the idea of it being a cabinet of curiosity.

All in all I was very pleased with how it all turned out!
